Orientation to the lab: key terms

TermDefinition
Artifact Foreign objects visible through a microscope, but unrelated to the specimen, or non related to the object being examined
Centrifuge A device used to spin a specimen at high speed until it separates into its component parts
Control sample A specimen that has a known value; used as a comparison for test results on a patient sample
Histology The Study of microscopic evaluation of tissues to make a diagnosis
Qualitive tests Lab tests which test to see if a substance is present or absent in the specimen
Quality control program The component of the lab that ensures accuracy in test results through careful monitoring of test procedures
Quantitative tests Lab tests which give the concentration or amount of a substance in a tested specimen
Reagents A chemical or chemically treated substance used in test procedures and formulated to treat in specific ways when exposed under specific conditions
Reference laboratory A laboratory owned and operated by an organization outside the practice
Serology Testing the liquid part of the blood for antibodies against specific microorganisms
