Use this to prepare for science mid-term exam

QuestionAnswer
What is the name for the process in which plants get their energy? Photosynthesis
What are the inputs for photosynthesis? Carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight
What are the outputs of photosynthesis? Oxygen and glucose
What are the two processes that occur for animals to get their energy? Cellular respiration and digestion
What are the reactants of cellular respiration? Sugar and oxygen
What are the products of cellular respiration? Carbon dioxide, water, and useable energy (ATP)
What are the 3 uses for the energy created in cellular respiration? Physical activities, body heat, and energy storage
Why are plants called "producers"? They make their own food
Why are animals called "consumers"? They eat other organisms and don't make their own food
What happens to the total energy available as the energy pyramid goes up? The energy decreases by 10% each level
In an ecosystem, which level of the energy pyramid will have the largest population? Bottom/producers
In an ecosystem, which level of the energy pyramid will have the smallest population? Top/apex predator
Why do decomposers belong at the side of the energy pyramid and not the bottom? They break down matter form all levels of the pyramid
What is the climate and what species are found in a temperate Forest? Four seasons, lots of rain, deciduous trees, and rabbits/birds/deer
An area of the planet characterized by the climate and the species found there. Biome
This is a community of different species and their interactions with each other and their physical environment Ecosystem
This is the physical space where an organism makes its home. Habitat
This is an organisms role in its community, how it fits in. "Job" Niche
What are the 7 main land biomes we researched? Tundra, Tropical grassland, Taiga/Boreal Forest, Tropical Rainforest, Temperate Forest, desert, and Temperate grassland
What biome do we live in? Temperate Forest
Anything that is living or has once lived or will live. Biotic
Anything that has never been or never will be alive. Abiotic
What is ecological succession? The gradual change in the species structure of a community over a period of time.
What is the difference between primary and secondary succession? Primary is the colonization of new land when nothing has been there before, when secondary is the rebuild of a community that follows a disturbance.
What are adaptations and what are the two types of them? Adaptations are characteristics that help an organism survive. The two different types of structural and behavioral.
Give an example of a structural adaptation, how it benefits the organism, and an organism with that adaptation. Sharp claws to help them hunt and climb trees. A tiger
What is biodiversity and why is it important? The variety of different organisms in an area and it makes the area more resilient to change.
Does biodiversity increase or decrease as you get farther away from the equator? Decrease
What is an invasive species and what is an example of one? Species that have been introduced to areas outside their native rand and can cause harm. Zebra Mussels
What is an atom? Basic unit of matter, made up of subatomic parts
What determines the atomic number of an element? Number of protons
What 2 subatomic particles make up the atomic mass? Protons and neutrons
How are elements arranged in the periodic table? By increasing atomic number
True or false: Elements are a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. True
What are the 3 main categories of elements on the periodic table? Metal, non-metal, and metalloids
What are 3 characteristics of metals? High melting point, good conductors, and high density
What are 3 characteristics of nonmetals? Low melting point, poor conductors, and low density
What are 3 characteristics of metalloids? Medium melting point, medium conductors, and medium density
