Question | Answer |
---|---|
molecule | a group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds |
mixture | two or more substances that are together in the same place but their atoms are not chemically bonded |
homogeneous mixture | made of 2 or more substances that are so evenly mixed you cannot see the different parts (their atoms have not chemically bonded) |
physical change | changes the form or appearance of matter but does not turn any substance in the matter into a new substance; the original substance remains |
chemical change | a change in matter that produces one or more new substances; the original substance is gone |
Law of Conservation of Mass | states that matter is not created or destroyed in a chemical or physical change |
weight | a measure of the force of gravity acting on an object |
heterogeneous mixture | made of 2 or more substances mixed together but you can see the different parts |
change | to make or become different from what the substance would be if left alone |
energy | the ability to do work or cause change |
exothermic change | a change in which energy is given off; energy is released |
endothermic change | a change in which energy is absorbed (taken in) |
compound | a substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined in a set ratio |
atom | the basic particle from which all elements are mad |
chemical bond | a force of attraction between two atoms; happens when atoms combine |
subscript | numbers that come after an element’s symbol in a chemical formula; these tell the number of atoms of that element |
substance | a pure form of matter that contains only one type of atom |
