Integumentary System Vocab.
Term | Definition |
---|---|
integumentary system | Composed of the skin and its accessory organs (hair, nails, and glands) |
Protection | The skin the covers the body and acts as a physical barrier that protects underlying tissues from physical damage, ultraviolet rays, and pathogenic invasion |
Body termperature maintenance | Skin that contains sweat glands that secrete fluids in the form of perspiration to help regulate internal temps |
Excretion | small amounts of waste products (water, salt and organic compounds) that are flushed out of sweat glands during perspiration |
Perception of stimuli | skin that contains large amounts of nerve endings and receptors that detect stimuli related to touch, pressure, and pain |
Epidermis | forms the outer most layer of skin |
Epithelial tissue | layers the epidermis is divided into- composed of densely packed cells |
Mucous membrane | specialized type of epithelial tissue- protectivey lines any body cavity that opens to the outside world (ex nasal passage) |
Keratin | fibrous water- repellant protein - primary subsains for epidermis also found in nails |
Melanocytes | specialized cells that produce and contains dark-to-black pigments called melanin |
Melanin | responsible for skins pigmentation or color, helps protect skin against ultraviolet rays of the sun |
Stratified squamous epithelium | terms means arranged in scaly layers - these cells are always shed and replaced by new cells underneath them |
Basal layer | deepest layer of epidermis, always multiplying as young cells push old cells t o the surface |
Dermis | lies below epidermis- made up of connective tissue, blood, lymphatic vessels, nerve fibers, hair follicles and sebaceous and sweat glands |
Sebum | oily substance |
Hair follicles | tiny secretory cavities from which hair grows |
Collagen | fibrous protein found in skin, bone, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments - give skin it;s shape, strength, and elasticity (Greek origin) |
Subcutaneous layer | deepest layer of the skin- connects the skin to the surface muscles and composed of lipocytes |
Lipocytes | cells that manufactures and store fat- provides eat and protection |
Gland | cell of group of cells that secretes select substances within of our of the body |
Sebaceous glands | located in the dermal layer- tony glands that secrets oily substances called sebum |
Lipids | group of organic compounds that consist of fats - lubricate skin and minimize water loss |
Sweat glands | tiny coil glands in dermis secretes sweat through pores |
Perspiration | sweat- cools the body |
Hair shaft | where each strand of hair grows from a root of a follicle |
arrector pili | bundles of very small muscle fibers - erect when frithened causing goose bumps |
Nail plate | hard translucent part of the nail |
Cuticle | narrow band of epidermal tissue attached to surface of the nail |
Nail root | area of dermis where nail rests |
Lunula | semilunar white area as the proximal end of the nail |
Corticosteroid | used to treat skin conditions relates to autoimmune disease ex; eczema |
Immunosuppressant | drug used to treat certain conditions by suppressing immune system, |
Nails | made up of hard keratin |
