TermDefinition
Mitosis The process by which a core is divided into two identical cells, each containing the same number and kind of the mother cell chromosomes .
Chromosome threadlike strands of DNA and protein in a cell nucleus that carry the code to the characteristics of the cells of an organism.
Asexual reproduction A type of reproduction in which a new organism is produced from one parent .
Sexual reproduction A type of reproduction in which a new organism is produced by combining two parent sex cells .
Sperm The reproductive cell or gamete of the male parent produced in the testicles .
Egg In organisms that reproduce sexually , the sex cell ( gamete ) of the parent female.
Meiosis A division of the cell nucleus to produce sex cells ( gametes ) .
Fertilization In organisms that reproduce sexually, the fusion of an egg and sperm ( gametes ).
Zygote In sexually reproducing organisms , the cell formed by fertilization .
DNA Deoxyribonucleic acid, a chemical in the cell nucleus that information and stores the genetic code , consists of stands of molecules that control the activity of cells , using coded instructions .
Gene The segment of DNA on a chromosome that directs the making of a specific protein , thereby controlling the traits are passed to offspring .
RNA ribonucleic acid, carries codes for protein production .
Mutation Any permanent change in the genetic material bodies .
