QuestionAnswer
What is the definition of SUBSCRIPT? A number written below and to the right of a chemical symbol that shows the number of a specific type of atom present.
What is the definition of CRYSTAL? A solid material whose atoms, molecules, or ions are arranged in an ordered pattern.
What is the definition of PURE SUBSTANCE? A single substance, either an element or a compound, with definite composition and properties.
What is the definition of MOLECULE? The simplest unit of a chemical compound that can exist, formed when two or more atoms join together chemically.
What is the definition of SOLID? A state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume.
What is the definition of COMPOUND? A new substance with unique chemical and physical properties formed when two or more elements are chemically bonded during a chemical reaction
What is the definition of MATTER? Anything that has volume and mass.
What are the 3 States of Matter? Solid, Liquid, & Gas.
Which State of Matter has their atoms closest together? Solid.
Which State of Matter has their atoms widely scattered? Gas.
Is hot air more dense or cold? Cold air.
What is matter made up of? Molecules in any state.
What is molecules made up of? Atoms.
(TRUE/FALSE) You can see molecules and atoms easily. False.
(TRUE/FALSE) You cannot change the State of Matter by adding or removing Thermal Energy. False.
How many oxygen atoms are in one molecule of water? 1.
Which State of Matter has a specific shape and volume? Solid.
Which State of Matter has definite volume, but no definite shape? Liquid.
Which State of Matter has no definite shape or volume. Gas.
How do you increase the kinetic energy of molecules so they change state from solid to liquid or liquid to gas? Add heat.
What is the melting point of water? 0 degrees Celsius.
What molecular change is happening when ice melts? The molecules start vibrating and the space between them increases until they turn into liquid.
What is the boiling point of water? 100 degrees Celsius.
What molecular change is happening when water boils? The molecules in water vibrate faster until the space between them increases so much that they become a gas.
What happens when you remove heat from molecules in a substance? The kinetic energy goes down and the molecules get closer together eventually causing condensation or freezing.
At what temperature does liquid water freeze into ice? 0 degrees Celsius
What is special about liquid water when it freezes? It expands. Other liquids get smaller.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
