HIV/AIDS | STI characterized by opportunistic infections that arise as white blood cells (mainly helper T cells) decline. |
Candidiasis | Infection of yeastlike fungus that can lead to fatal systemic diseases. |
Chlamydia | Most common bacterial STI in North America that can lead to discharge and pelvic pain in females; urethritis and proctitis in males; and blindness in newborns. |
Genital herpes | Most common viral STI in North America caused from HSV-2 and causes painful blister-like sores. |
Gonorrhea | a STI that can cause ulcer like lesions and discharge in men, but most women are asymptomatic. |
Hepatitis B | inflammatory disease of the liver usually caused by blood exchange. |
Human papilloma virus | STI that forms papilloma on genital warts; is the primary cause of cervical cancer. |
Syphilis | spirochete usually first appears as painless red pustules that erode to form chancres; can progress to mental confusion, organ destruction, and death. |
Trichomoniasis | single-celled organisms causing vaginal pain and swelling in women and urethra and prostate inflammation with pelvic pain in men. |
