Neuron A nerve cell that transmits information in the brain and nervous system
Soma (cell body) The main part of a neuron containing the nucleus, where cell processes occur
Axon A long, slender projection that carries electrical impulses away from the neuron's cell body
Axon terminal The end part of an axon that makes connections with other neurons or cells
Dendrite Branch-like extensions of a neuron that receive signals from other neurons
Synaptic interconnections The connections formed between neurons at the synapses where they communicate
neurotransmitters Chemicals that transmit signals across a synapse from one neuron to another
Resting potential the electrical charge difference across the membrane of a neuron at rest
Action potential A sudden change in electrical charge that travels down the axon, transmitting a signal to
All or None response The principle that a neuron either fully responds to a stimulus or not at all
Absolute refractory period A short period after an action potential when a neuron cannot fire again
Electrical communication The process by which neurons transmit signals through electrical impulses
chemical communication The process by which neurons communicate through neurotransmitters
Receptor sites The process of neurotransmitters being reabsorbed by the neuron that released them
Agonist increases/excites neurotransmitter activity
Antagonists decreases/inhibits neurotransmitters activity
