According to George Herbert Meade what does the self consist of? the "me" and "i"
what is the "me" the "me" is the socialized part of a person
what is the "i" the "i" is the action and the present of our actions
what is self-concept? the self-concept is your overall sense of who you are
what is self-schemas? the elements of ourself concept that serve a mental template by which we organize the world. ex: when you say you're smart you are more likely to notice when someone else is smart + interact w/ them.
what is self-reference effect? the tendency to process differently + remember well information related to one's self
what is ilusion of transparency? the illusion that our concealed emotions can leak out and be easily read by others.
How do we gain our self-schemas? by social comparison
what is self concept? your overall sense of who you are
what is social comparison? evaluation one's abilities/opinions by comparing one's self with others
what is social status? the position one has in a group/society
why are there certain roles? because there are behavioral expectations or requirements attached to a self
what are possible selves? what we dream/dread becoming in the future
what is dramaturgy? idea that social life is like a drama/play
what does socialization teach us? teaches us how to act when given a social script and learn the social expectations to act out the role
what is impression management? attempting to manage the impression others receive of us
what is front stage? where we perform
what is backstage? where we get ready before we perform
how does impression management work? by collectively defining a situation, by communicating with others what to think of us, using fronts, by being dramatic, and presenting our idealized self
what's a working consensus? people agreeing upon a definition of a situation
what are expressions given? conscious, intentional, or usually verbal communication
what are expressions given off? may or may not be intentional but they tend to be nonverbal such as body language, facial expressions, style of dress
what are fronts? used to control audience perception
what is setting? where the impression management is happening such as our surroundings
what is a personal front? what we bring to the table/ what we project. such as sex, race, clothing, looks, etc
what is appearance? how we look the part of convey the status
what are manners? how we play the role
what is dramatic realization? the portrayal of aspects of the performer that one really wants the audience to know
what is idealization? trying to live up to what others consider to be the idea. this can lead to misinterpretation as we're not showing our true selves
