Cecum | place where the small and large intestine come together. |
Esophagus | the tube that carries food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach |
protein | molecules that are made up of amino acids & needed for growth and repair of body cells |
duodenum | place where the stomach joins the small intestine and most of chemical digestion takes place |
Large Intestine | the last organ of the digestive system which removes liquid wastes and stores solid wastes. |
liver | blood passes through this before it moves other parts of the body; toxins are broken down |
Small Intestine | organ of the digestive system in which most digestion takes place. |
digestion | process that breaks down food into molecules so they can be used by the body's cells for energy |
enzyme | molecules that speed up the rate of chem. reactions in the body |
mechanical digestion | process that occurs when food is chewed & mixed in the mouth and churned in the stomach |
chemical digestion | process that breaks down large molecules that can be absorbed by the body's cells; takes place in the mouth, stomach & sm. intestine |
saliva | watery enzyme containing fluid in the mouth that is mixed with food during digestion |
chyme | thin watery product that is the result of digestion |
peristalis | wave-like muscular contractions that move food through the digestive system |
villi | finger-like projections in the sm. intestine where nutrients are absorbed in the blood stream |
Rectum | temporary storage facility for feces |
Pancreas | produces enzymes that break down digestible foods |
Gall Bladder | stores the bile that is made in the liver and help the digestions process. |
