Indications | 1) To seduce conscious patients when synchronized cardioversion is required or prior to intubation 2) As an anticonvulsant for seizures 3) As a skeletal muscle relaxant 4) Consider use in cocaine overdose |
Contraindications | Contraindicated for pts with glaucoma ; hypersensitivity ETOH |
Precautions | 1) Use with caution in COPD patients or patients with respiratory depression (from any source) 2) Use with caution in hypotension patients |
Side Effects | 1) Transient hypotension 2) Reflex Tachycardia 3) Respiratory depression/ arrest 4) Dizziness Ataxia 5) Can cause local venous irritation |
Administration | Adults 2-10mg SLOW IV bolus 2 mins Titrate until desired degree of sedation obtained or seizure activity is controlled IF UNABLE TO START IV ADMINISTER RECTALLY USING TEFLON IV CATH W/NEEDLE REMOVED OR 1CC SYRINGE |
Special Notes | 1) Should not be mixed with other drugs. Administer close to IV site followed by rapid flush 2) Synergistic effect when mixed with other CNS depressants (ETOH) 3) Requires hospital RN/physician witness for wasting of unused Rx |
