water cycle lexin
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Aquifer | An under ground space that stores ground water |
Condensation | This process occurs when a gas changes into a liquid |
Evaporation | The process occurs whaen a liquid changes into a gas |
Groundwater | Water that is stored in the ground. It is located in pores of soil and in the cracks of rocks |
Hydrological cycle | Another name for the water cycle |
Infilteration | The downward movement of water from the land surface into the soil |
Percipitation | Any type of water that falls to the earth like snow, hail, mist or rain |
Saturated | Refers to a substance that can hold water. A substance is saturated if it is unabel to hold anymore water |
Saturated zone | A part of the ground where all pore spaces and cracks are filled with water |
Surface runoff | Water which does not infilterate the soil but flows over the surface of ground |
Unsaturated zone | An area of ground above the water tabel. This area can hold more water. Not saturated. |
Water Vapor | Water in the gaseous form or state. |
Sublimation | The process of a solid changing into a gas without going through the liquid phase |
Transpiration | The evaporation of water into the atmosphere from the leaves and stems of plants |
Evapotranspiration | The sum of evaporation and transpiration |
Hydraulic Conductivity | The rate at which water moves through to the soil |
Vadose Zone | Another name for the unsaturated zone |
Stomata | A microscopic opening in a leaf that allows water vapor to escape |
Permeability | A measure of how easily water can flow through a substance Example: Sand is more permeable than clay |
Water Table | The boundary between the saturated zone and the unsaturated zone |
Confined Aquifer | AN impermeable soil/rock layer exists that prevents water from seeping into the aquifer from ground surface above. |
Unconfined Aquifer | water seeps from the ground surface directly above the aquifer |
