breathing air moving in and out of the lungs
cellular respiration a process where oxygen (from breathing) is used to break down sugar (glucose) to make energy
inhale to take air into the lungs by contracting the diaphragm
exhale to force air out of the lungs, by relaxing the diaphragm and make the chest cavity smaller
cilia tiny hairlike structures in the nasal cavity that sweep dust and mucus to the back of the throat
lung cancer uncontrolled cell growth in the lung tissue, that is usually caused by smoking
bronchitis a disease often caused by smoking, where the bronchi constrict (get smaller), and too much mucus is produced, allowing bacteria to grow
constrict to get smaller or to shrink
emphysema a disease of the lungs where the alveoli stop working properly
asthma a rapid constriction (shrinking) of the bronchial tubs, causing shortness of breath, wheezing, or coughing
tar a poisonous chemical in cigarette smoke
nephron the microscopic filtering units in the kidneys
dialysis the process of having a machine filter waste from the blood, used for people whose kidneys have failed
liver an organ that aids in digestion and excretion
skin the largest organ in the body, excretes water and wastes through sweat
kidneys two bean-shaped organs at waist level (along your back) that filter waste (urea) from the blood
