Biotic vs. Abiotic, Energy Flow, and Material Cycles.
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Competition. | When organisms struggle against each other to survive. |
Abiotic Factors. | Physical, non-living, or chemical factors which influence living things. |
Biotic Factors. | Living factors which influence living things. |
Carrying Capacity. | The number of organisms an environment can support. |
Limiting Factors. | Factors which determine the types and numbers of organisms of a species in an ecosystem. |
Autotrophs/producers. | Organisms which make their own food. |
Herbivores. | Organisms which use autotrophs as a source of food. |
Carnivores. | Organisms which use other organisms as a source of food. |
Secondary consumers. | Organisms that consume primary consumers, but can also be consumed by trietary consumers. |
Omnivores. | Organisms which can use both producers and other organisms for food. |
Heterotrophs. | Organisms which do not produce their own food. |
Food Chain. | A diagram which indicates the transfer of energy from producers through a series of organisms which feed upon each other. |
Food Web. | A diagram which displays a series of interrelated food chains which provide a more accurate picture of the feeding relationships in an ecosystem. |
Energy Pyramid. | A diagram which provides a means of describing the feeding and energy relationships within a food chain or web. |
Biomass. | The total quantity or weight of organisms in a given area or volume. |
Transpiration. | When water is lost to the atmosphere by the activities of plants. |
Decomposers. | An organism that decomposes organic material. |
The Carbon-Oxygen Cycle. | The movement of carbon and oxygen between the atmosphere, oceans, plants, animals and the ground. |
Oxygen. | A colorless, odorless, gaseous element, that is required for the survival of many living things. |
Ecology. | The branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings. |
Primary consumer. | A herbivore; an animal that has adapted to eat plants. |
