What is memory? the process by which we recollect prior experiences and information and skills learned in the past.
3 kinds of memory? Explicit episodic, explicit semantic, implicit
Explicit episodic memory of a specific event, includes flashback memories
Explicit semantic General knowledge may not remember where we learned it
Implicit Skills and procedures learned
3 processes of memory Encoding, Storage, and Retrieval
Encoding Translate information into a form in which it can be stored
Storage maintaining the encoded information over a period of time.
Retrieval Locating stored info and return it to conscious thought.
3 stages of memory Sensory, Mental images, sound memory, short term memory
Sensory Immediate sensory acknowledgement of information if you want to keep it you have to do something with it quick.
Mental Images Use mental pictures you form in your head they are held in the iconic memory for a fraction of a second they are "snapshots" and very accurate
Sound Memory echos can be remembered echoic imagery can last for a few seconds
Short Term Memory Even noting iconic and echoic memory you transfer it into your short term memory
