---|---|
is often necessary to decompress the stomach after sx intervention. | NG intubation |
what is salem sump ng tube large lumen for | for gastric contents or irrigation |
what is salem sump ng tube small lumen for | for the air vent to ensure proper sump function. |
instrument use for NG intubation | NG tube |
sized measred in fr | 14fr., 16fr., or 18 fr. Size for adults |
what kind of seringe use to irrigate NG tube. | Catheter-tip syringe |
What are the NG Tube management | surgical decompression, medical decompression, wall suction. |
what is the purpose of surgical decompression? | to shrink or decompress the stomach to allow for proper healing of internal surgical incisions or connections (anastomosis) |
what is the purpose of wall suction | to evacuate the contents from the stomach and minimize nause and vomiting until healing can occur |
what is medical decompression for? | used to rest the stomach or bowel and may be used in case of GI bleeding or drug overdoses to remove toxins. |
what will you do to reestablish suctioning if wall suction of ng tube doesn't work? | inject 20-30ml air bolus through the air vent or into the NG tube. |
what is the amount of LCWS (low continues wall suction) | 60-80 mmgHg but not more than 120mmHg. |
What is the importance of checking patency? | if the wall suction stop or intermitent, lact of decompression may be disturbe the integrity of the internal anastomosis or suture line. |
what is the standard irrigation process for patency of ng tube? | instillation of 30ml fluid q4h. |
What is the purpose of clamping NG tube? | to administer medication via tube. It should remain clamp for 30 min after med admin. |
What is the precaution if NG tube suction is off? | make sure the NG tube rest above the pt's stomach to prevent reflux. |
What is the instruction with regards to head of bed? | 30 deg. , esp after meds, during irrigation, during tube feeding, and if the tube is clamped. |
What do you check to confirm placement of NG tube? | check air bolus, pH testing of gastric aspirate, and KUB x-ray. |
How to check air bolus? | listen to whooshing sound to LUQ while injecting 30 ml of air to the NG tube. |
What are the things that can not be confirm through air bolus? | med admin, gastric lavage, and tube feeding. |
What confirmation do you get from pH testing of gastric aspiration? | Acid pH from the sample should be < 6. may be difficult to use using feeding tube for aspiration may cause the tube to collapse. |
What is the purpose of KUB x-ray for confirmation of palcement of NG tube? | x-ray of KUB will show the abdominal region. This is standard for confirmation. |
What is the standard test for dobhoff or Kaofeed NG tube? | KUB X-ray |
What are necessary information for documentation? | size of tube, the naris it is inserted, appearance of nasal mucosa, confim place. , and method used, patency, wall suction wall or clamped, descr. Of gastric aspirate, amount of gastric asp. |
NG tube smaller in diameter, comfortable, flexible, and soft. | Feeding tube for enteral nutrition |
How to manage status-post pt with NG tube | verify if md wants it connected to wall suction (continuous, intermittent, low or medium) |
how to confirm placement | standard is pH testing., KUB if ordered by MD |
NG tube to decompress stomach | Salem sump NG tube. |
How to achive stomach decompression | connect NG tube to wall suction |
what kind of NG tube used for feeding | Dobhoff or Kaofeed feeding tube |
How to confirm feeding tube? | KUB , pH testing |
