Description: | Nitroglycerin is a rapid smooth muscle relaxant that reduces peripheral vascular resistance, blood pressure, venous return, and cardiac workload. |
Indications: | Chest pain associated with angina and AMI, Acute pulmonary edema |
Onset/Duration: | 1-3 minutes; 30-60 minutes |
Contraindications: | Hypersensitivity, Hypotension(systolic under 100mmHg), Head Injury (cerebral Hemorrhage), Increased ICP, Severe anemia, Shock, Patients taking sildenafil (Viagra) |
Adverse Reactions: | Headache, Hypotension, Nausea, Vomiting, Diaphoresis, Reflex tachycardia from vasodilation |
Precautions: | Nitro is light sensitive and will lose potency when exposed to air, If given IV, must be mixed in glass bottle, DO NOT give any other drugs through the IV line |
Dosage/Route: | 1 tablet (0.4mg) sublingual. May be repeated every 3-5 minutes up to 3 tablets, 0.4mg (1 spray) SL up to 3 sprays CHECK BLOOD PRESSURE AFTER EACH ADMINISTRATION |
Drug Interactions: | Incompatible with other drugs IV, Additive effects with other vasodilators |
