Genetics-Heredity

QuestionAnswer
Who is called the Father of Genetics(they discovered how genes work) Gregory Mendel
What plant did The father of Genetics study? The pea plant
Heredity This is when a parent passes on traits or features to their child Ex: shortness, eyecolor
Traits These are characterists or quality like height, eye color etc.
Genetics The science that studies Heredity
Purebred organism These organism have genes that are alike for a trait ex: TT for tall tall
Children are called what? offsprings
Filial Generations(groups). Sons or daughters
fertilization Process where sperm and eggs mix to make a new organism. In pea plants the Pollen must 1st reach the Pistil of the Pea Flower!!!
Genes These are the things that control a trait and make us look tall or short etc...
Alleles These are the different genes that are shown with letters
phenotype These are the visible characteristics of a person that we can see like eye color, and being tall or short.
Genotype These are the genes or the genetic makeup of an organism ex: xy, bb
Dominant Allele These are the stronger genes and they mask or hide the other weaker genes. Usually marked with capital letters ex: TT
Recessive Allele These genes don't show up in the organisms because they are weaker and get hidden by the stronger genes. Shown by lowercase letters.
Hybrid The organism has 2 different alleles for a trait ex:Bg, cs
Incomplete Dominance This happens when genes mix or blend together and neither gene dominates over the other. They have equal strength
Probability This number tells the likelihood that something will happen or occur
Punnett Square This chart help you see the probability of traits happening. It shows all the combinations that can result for a combination of traits.
Homozygous Identical or the same alleles for a trait, they are a purebred
Heterozygous Organism has 2 different alleles for a trait. They are a hybrid or mixture
Codominance The alleles are not dominant or recessive, they mix together and have same strength
