All Vocab

QuestionAnswer
Cells The basic unit of life
Cell Theory All living things are composed of cells, cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things, and new cells are produced from living cells
Nucleus The large membrane enclosed a structure that contains the cell's genetic material in the form of DNA
Eurkaryotes Cells that contain nuclei
Prokaryotes Cells that don't have a nucleus
Organelles Little organs that carry out the cells needs
Cytoplasm The outside portion that encloses the cell
Nuclear Envelope The outside layer of the nucleus composed of two layers
Chromatin DNA bound to protein
Chromosomes Threadlike substances that contain genetic material
Nucleolus Where ribosomes are assembeled
Ribosomes Small particales of DNA and protein
Endoplasmic Reticulum Where lipid components af the cell membrane are assembled
Golgi Apparatus Modify, sort, and package proteins and other materials from the E.R.
Lysosomes Small organelles filled with enzymes
Vacuoles Stores water, salt, proteins, and carbs.
Mitochondria Organelles that convert chemical energy stored in food into useable energy
Chloroplasts Organelles that capture energy from the sunlight and convert it into usable energy
Cytoskeleton The internal organization that supports the structure of the cell
Centrioles Organize cell division
Cell Membrane A thin flexible layer that surrounds the cell
Cell Wall Strong supporting layer of some cells
Lipid Bilayer The compositon of the cell membrane
Concentration The volume or mass/ volume in solution
Diffusion When particles in solution are not equally spread throughout the area
Equilibrium The concentration of the solute is the same throughout the system
Osmosis The diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane
Isotonic Two solutions of the "Same Strength"
Hyperyonic One solution is more concentrated than the other
Hypotonic Dilute solution of sugar
Facilitated Helps the diffusion of glucose
Diffusion Hundreds of different protein channels
Active Transport Moving materials in the different direction
Endocytosis The process of taking material into the cell by means of infolding
Phagocytosis Extensions of the cytoplasm surround a particle and package and the vacuole engulfs it
Pinocytosis Tiny pockets form along the the cell membrane, fill with liquid and pinch off to form vacuoles in the cell
Exocytosis Many cells also release large amounts of material from the cell
Cell Specialization Cells throughout the organism can develop in different ways to perform different tasks
Tissue A group of similar cells that perform a certain function
Organ Many tissues work together to make a organ
Organ System A group of organs that work together to perform a specific function

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
