ecosystem All the living and non-living things that interact in an area.
abiotic A non-living part of an ecosystem
population All members of one species in an area.
community All the different populations that live together in an area.
producers An organism that can make its own food.
comsumers Organisms that obtain energy by feeding on other organisms.
decomposers Organisms that break down wases and dead organisms.
bacteria A microscopic decomposer that returns energy in the form of simple molecules to the environment.
fungus Decomposers like molds and mushrooms that "recycle" nutrients.
parasite An organism that benefits by living on or in a host in parasitism
predator An organism that does the killing in predation.
prey An organism that is killed in predation.
competition The struggle between organisms for limited resources in a habitat.
pollution A change to the environment that has a negative effect on living things.
mutualism A symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit.
species extinction When a species completely disappears from the Earth.
commensalism A symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and the other is neither harmed nor hurt.
food web The pattern ov overlapping food chains in an ecosystem.
energy pyramid A diagram that shows the amount of energy moving from one feeding level to the next.
adaptations Behaviors and physical characteristics that allow organisms to live successfully in an environment.
limiting factor An environmental factor (food, space, weather) that prevents a population from increasing.
