QuestionAnswer
osmosis movement of water from an area of of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a semipermeable membrane
isotonic solution The is the same concentration of a dissolved substance inside and outside the cell
hypotonic solution Concentration of a substance outside the cell is lower than inside the cell so the dissolved substance moves into the cell causing the cell to swell
hypertonic solution Concentration of a dissolved substance in a cell so water moves out of the cell and causes it to shrink
passive transport no energy is used to transport molecules into or out of a cell
facilitated diffusion The use of proteins to help transport molecules across the plasma membrane from an area of low concentration to high concentration requiring no energy
active transport Movement of materials through a membrane from an area of lesser concentration to an area of more concentration, which requires energy
endocytosis Occurs when a cell surrounds and takes in materials from its surroundings
exocytosis Secretion or expelling of material from a cell
