What are the genetic factors in Major Depressive Disorder? Some studies suggest that some people inherit a biological predisposition, researchers have found evidence that may be tied to specific genes
What are the biomedical factors in Major Depressive Disorder? Neurotransmitters: Serotonin and Norepinephrine, the discovery of truly effective antidepressant medications which relieved depression by increasing either serotonin or norepinephrine confirmed the NT role
What are the psychological views in Major Depressive Disorder? Psychodynamic Model: depression triggered by early loss and inadequate parenting. Behavioral Model: Depression Results from changes in rewards and punishments people receive in their lives

What are the two kinds of Bipolar Disorder? Bipolar I & Bipolar II
What is Bipolar I? Full manic and major depressive episodes (ex: weeks of mania followed by episode of depression), some experience mixed episodes (ex: swing from manic to depressive symptoms in one day)
What is Bipolar II? Hypnomatic episodes and major depressive episodes- mildly manic episodes alternate with major depressive episodes over the course of time.
What is Cyclothymic Disorder? A final diagnostic option: if a person experiences numerous episodes of hypomania and mild depressive symptoms for two or more years interupted by periods of normal mood, may eventually blossom into Bipolar I or II
What is the permissive theory of bipolar disorder? low serotonin may open the door to a mood disorder and permit norepinephrine activity to define the particular form the disorder will take low serotonin+ low norepinephrine= depression low serotonin + high norepinephrine= mania
What is Adjunctive Psychotherapy? When mood stabilizing drugs alone are not effective clinicians use psychotherapy as an adjunct to medication, antipsychotic medications may be prescribed too (often reduce agitation)
