Corpus Callosum
Body of nerve fibers that connect to the right and left hemispheres, allowing communication between the two.
Wernicke's Area
An important region for the processing of acoustic signals so that they can be distinguished as speech, music, or noise.
Left Hemisphere
More dominant for language, calculations, math and logical abilities.
Reticular Activation System
Crucial for maintaining a state of consciousness. Situated at the core of the brain stem between the medulla&midbrain. It is involved with circadian rhythms. Damage can lead to permanent coma.
Cerebellum
Coordinates movement and is involved in learned rote movements. Balance, posture, and movement!
Right Hemisphere
Dominant for spatial abilities, face recognition, visual imagery and music.
Cerebral Cortex
Consists of many thin layers of cells covering the cerebrum&is largely responsible for higher mental functions.It is divided into 4 sect.,called "lobes".The "roof" of this is called the neocortex,thought to be the most recently evolved part of the brain
Pons
It is involved in motor control and sensory analysis
Thalamus
Major clearinghouse for information going to/from the spinal cord&cerebrum. All sensory systems except smell pass through here before the information reaches the cerebral cortex. Also generates emotions.
Forebrain
Consists of the cerebrum, thalamus, and hypothalamus(part of the limbic system). Collectively, this area is the largest and most highly developed part of the human brain. The source of intellectual activities
