show King Manuel sent him on expedition around the Cape of Good Hope. He left in July 1497 from Potugal and arrived in India in 1498. Some of the people in India speaked Portuguese. He made two more trips back and even governed a small colony.

show In 1501 he led a Spanish fleet to the coast of todays South America. He knew he wasn't in Asia and thought he had found a "new world." A mapmaker in Germany named this America in honor of Amerigo.

show Had a settlement in Panama, he had heard stories from Native Americans about another ocean farther west, and he went to find it. He and his men went through thick jungle and swamps, and in 1513 he reached a mountain in were he could see the Pacific Ocean.
