| Acne | noncontagious inflammation of the sebaceous glands in the skin. Avoid painful, itching, or weeping areas |
| Fever blisters (herpes simplex) | contagious open sores and vesicles around the lips and gums. Local contraindication |
| Chickenpox | contagious skin condition characterized by a rash that develops into pustules and vesicles lasting approximately 5-7 days. Caused by varicella-zoster virus. Contraindicated |
| Shingles (herpes zoster) | rash along dermatome, local contraindication |
| Warts (verrucae) | contagious infection of the epidermis. Many different varieties including plantar & linear. Local contraindication. |
| Tinea pedis | athlete's foot - itchy shallow lesions on the foot and between toes, local contraindication |
| Tinea cruris | jock itch - shallow lesions in the groin area, local contraindication |
| Scabies | Sarcoptes scabiei (itch mite) - itchy eruptions (papules and vesicles are common) that usually affect the webs of the hands, wrists, elbows, gluteal cleft, or nipples. Contraindicated |
| Pediculosis | crabs (lice) - itchiness of the scalp, pubic area, or other places. Contraindicated, avoid direct contact. |
| Psoriasis | chronic, oval, silvery, plaque-like scales with red patches on skin, especially on the scalp, ears, genitalia, and bony prominences. Avoid if painful, itching, or weeping. |
| Scleroderma | autoimmune disease, deposition of collagen in the skin, lungs, heart, kidneys, GI tract. Mask like face. local contraindication |
| Atopic eczema | general inflammation of the skin; blister-like formations that burst & crust over, commonly involves scalp, arms, trunk, legs;may develop dry pigmented areas of skin that start @ elbows & knees & spread. |
| Lupus erythematosus | chronic inflammatory disease can manifest a butterfly rash across nose & cheek, giving the appearance of a wolf (lupus = wolf) |

| Decubitus ulcers | bedsores - dark patches of ulceration of the skin that lead to necrosis of the skin. massage to prevent. local contraindication. |
| 1st degree burn | affects epidermis; redness followed by shedding of skin. |
| 2nd degree burn | affects epidermis & dermis; redness & blistering; can leave scars. |
| 3rd degree burn | affects all layers & possibly underlying tissue; open wounds w/black charring & white necrotic tissue. |
