| Question | Answer |
| evolution | change in species over time |
| natural selection | the environment chooses which traits are most adapted and will survive |
| overproduction | producing more offspring than the environment can hold |
| variation | having differences in the same trait |
| competition | "fight" against others for food, shelter, mates and etc. |
| adaptive value | the degree to which a trait "fits" an environment and is "chosen" for survival |
| survival of the fittest | the organisms with traits that fit the environment will survive and pass on their traits |
| species | organisms that are related and can reproduce to create fertile offspring |
| fossil record | remains or imprints of organisms from the past that give us an idea of the order that different organisms lived |
| mutation | a change in an organisms DNA that results in different traits |
| adaptation | the trait that best "fits" the environment and is chosen for survival |
| antibiotic resistance | bacteria that have mutated to be resistant to antibiotics (not affected by medicines)so they outcompete other bacteria. |
| organism similarities | common chemical formation, embryo development and anatomy structures between various different organisms because they came from a common ancestor |
| homologous structures | structures that are similar in seemingly unrelated organisms (ex. bone structure of limbs)that give reason to believe in a common ancestor |
| vestigial structures | structures that an organism has that they do not need...probably left over from an ancestor |
