MTC113 Pathologies of the Endocrine system

Acromegaly elongation and enlargement of bones of the head & extremities in adults. Hypersecretion of Growth Hormone (Pituitary)
Addison's Disease Increased pigmentation of the skin, weakness, and weightloss. Hyposecretion of cortisol (adrenocortical)
Adenocarcinoma Cancerous tumor in an endocrine gland that is able to produce the hormone secreted by that gland; a cause of some hypersecretion pathologies.
Cushing's Syndrome Upper body obesity, round face, easy bruising, osteoporosis, fatigue, high blood pressure, high blood sugar. Hypersecretion of cortisol (adrenocortical) May be caused by an adrenal gland tumor
Diabetes insipidus Inadequate secretion of Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
Diabetes mellitus Chronic disorder of carbohydrate metabolism. Pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin or body doesn't use it properly. Resulting in hyperglycemia and glycosuria.
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Requires daily insulin injections
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus May be controlled by diet.
Dwarfism Abnormally short in height. Hyposecretion of growth hormone.
Goiter Enlargement of the thyroid gland. Untreated hypothyroidism. Endemic (simple)is caused by an iodine deficiency
Grave's Disease Goiter and exophthalmos (excessive protrusion of the eyeballs). hypersecretion of T3 and T4. AKA: Hyperthyroidism
Hashimoto's Disease Chronic form of thyroiditis. Hyposecretion of T3 and T4.
Hirsutism Excessive amount of body hair; generally used to describe females having the adult male pattern of hair growth; often due to a hormone imbalance.
Tetany Tonic Muscular Contractions/Intermittent cramp Hyposecretion of PTH AKA: Tetany
Hypothyroidism Lowered basal metabolism rate, dry skin, slow pulse, low blood pressure, sluggishness and goiter. Deficient T3 and T4.
Myxedema Anemia, slow speech, enlarged tongue and facial features, edema of the skin, drowsiness, mental apathy. Hyposecretion of T3 and T4
Thyrotoxicosis Rapid heart action, tremors, enlarged thyroid gland exophthalmos and weight loss. Hypersecretion of T3 and T4.
Giantism hyperpituitarism that happens before puberty (children) Increased activity in growth plates
Hyperparathyroidism Caused by loss of calcium from bones and excessive excretion of Calcium and Phosphorus from Kidneys. Can lead to Brittle bones disease and Kidney Stones
