MTC113 Pathologies of the Urinary System

Cystitis | Inflammationa nd irritation of the bladder often caused by bacterial infection; more common in women |
Glomerulonephritis | Inflammation fo the kidney (primarily teh glomerulus) followign prior infection elsewhere in the body; results in protein in the urine, edema, hypertension, and symptoms of infection; may be acute or chronic |
Kidney Stones | Deposits of calculi (mineral salts) in the kidneys that can lead to irritation and/or blocked urine flow if they become lodged in the ureter |
Polycystic kidney disease | Formation of multiple noncancerous cysts within the kidneys, leading to destruction of kidney tissue, uremia and high blood pressure |
Pyelonephritis | Infection of the kidney and renal pelvis; may be acute or chronic; permanent kidney damage can occur if not treated with antibiotics. |
Renal Failure | condition in which teh kidneys are unable to clear the blood of urea and other waste products, which can become toxic; may be acute or chronic; uremia is the terminal stage of this disease. |
Urinary Incontinence | Leakage of urine caused frequently by age-related weakening of the urethral sphincter muscles |
Urinary Tract Infection | Infection, typically bacterial, of any organ of the urinary system; more commen in women. |
