Massage Strokes
Term | Definition |

Mechanical Effects | A physiologic effect that happens right underneath your hands |
Reflex Effects | A physiologic effect that happen through the nervous system |
Deep strokes | All have mechanical effects |
Light strokes | All have reflexive effects |
Effleurage | A light or deep stroking or gliding movement following bodily contours which dynamically effect the body mechanically and/or reflexively |
Effleurage | Variations: Deep or light; fast or slow; fast or slow; long or short; including nerve strokes |
Effleurage | Practical Applications: Used to apply oil; to adapt the body to touch; to evaluate the client's tissue; to facilitate transitions between strokes; to drain the area after other manipulations |
Effleurage (Deep) | All mechanical effects; increases circulation (both venous and lymphatic); stretches and broadens muscle fibers; reduces edema |
Effleurage (Light) | All reflexive effects: increases relaxation & sedation; relieves pain; increases circulation both venous and lymphatic; decreases blood pressure and pulse; reduces edema |
Petrissage | A lifting, stretching or squeezing movement used to lift the soft tissue away from adjacent structures |
Petrissage | Variations: Fast or slow; skin rolling; kneading; Big C little C; lifting, picking up (stretching), fulling (tissue is grasped bewteen the fingers and palm of the hand) |
