Problem Solving Transfer

What does the fortress story and the radiation problem have in common? The same logic can be used to solve both different problem (coming in smaller groups from multiple directions).
What did Gick and Holyoak (1980) discover in their research about problem solving transfer? The group who was not given a hint only transfered the solution 20% of the time. However the group who was given a hint transferred 92% of the time. Results showed a failure to spontaneously transfer.
Describe Perfetto et al (1983) study regarding the statements and connecting problems. Ss rate 2 statements for truthfullness and then presented problems with direct connection to statements. Results showed the group who was informed to connect the statements to the problems scored much better than the uninformed/control groups
What are some problems with access when using problem solving transfer? Analogous problems and over-attention to surface features.
How can we improve transfer? Teach principles, focus on why instead of how, prepare for explaining, problem comparison.
