integumentary system glands, hair, nails & other stuctures
skin AKA cutaneous membrane
epidermis outer layer
epidermis stratified squamous epithelium, no blood vessels present, receives nutrients by diffusion
keratin hard, fibrous protein, water repellant
dermis AKA stratum corium
dermis dense connective tissue that is deeper & usually thicker
dermis inner layer
sensory receptors specialized endings in the nerves, defect changes in the environment such as heat, cold, pain, pressure & touch
subcutaneous not actually a part of the skin, loosely anchors the skin to underlying organs
subcutaneous consists largely of loose connective tissue & adipose tissue
subcutaneous AKA hypodermis or superficial fascia
skin color result of many factors, some genetic, physiologic & environmental
melanin basic skin color is caused by this dark pigment
melanin produced by the melanocytes in the stratum basale of the epidermis
albinism individuals have light skin, no melanin
carotene yellowish pigment
pinkish tint in the skin, attributable to the blood vessels in the dermis
nails thin plates of dead skin
hair found on nearly all body surfaces
hair follicle has a bundle of smooth muscle attached with it
sebaceous glands hair, secretes sebum
sudoriferous glands sweat glands
merocrine sweat pore, perspiration
apocrine axillae, body oder
merocrine & apocrine sudoriferous glands
ceruminous glands found in ear canal
ceruminous glands secretes cerumen (earwax)
ceruminous glands modified sweat glands
functions of the skin protection, sensory reception, regulation of body temp, synthesis of vitamin D
