Personality | An individual's personal pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting |
Free Association | Method of releasing unconscious thoughts through speech |
Psychoanalysis | Theory and therapeutic technique focused on the unconscious |
Unconscious | Information processing one is unaware of; holds repressed wishes, desires, and thoughts |
Id | Unconscious part of the mind striving to satisfy basic aggressive/sexual desires |
Ego | Largely conscious part of personality which works on the reality principle |
Superego | Part of personality that represents idealism, judgements, guilt, and aspirations |
Psychosexual Stages | Childhood stages of development focused on erogenous zones |
Oedipus Complex | Boy's sexual desire for his mother and hatred for his father during the phallic stage |
Identification | Process where children incorporate other's views to create their own superego |
Fixation | Lingering focus for unresolved portions of the psychosexual stages |
Defense Mechanisms | Ego's protective methods against reality and anxiety |
Repression | Defense mechanism that hides unwanted thoughts in the subconscious |
Regression | Defense mechanism consisting of one's reversion to childlike behavior; ex. adult throwing a tantrum |
Reaction Formation | D.M. that results in the expression of feelings opposite of the anxiety-arousing unconscious feelings |
Projection | D.M. based on seeing (projecting) our feelings about ourselves onto others |
Rationalization | D.M. which generates self-justifying excuses for our behavior |
Displacement | D.M. of redirection of repressed motives or feelings onto a substitute object or person |
Projective Test | A personality test that provides ambiguous stimuli designed to trigger the projection of one's unconscious |
Rorshach Inkblot Test | A projective test which utilizes inkblots as stimuli; one's interpretation of them is analyzed by the psychologist for results |
Thematic Appreception Test | A projective test in which people express inner thoughts and feelings through the stories they create around images shown to them |
Collective Unconscious | Carl Jung's concept of shared, inherited reservoir of memory traces from our species' history |
