Anatomy- Digestive System
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Organs and order that make up the GI tract | mouth->esophagus->stomach->small intestine->large intestine-> rectum->anus |
What the digestive system is responsible for | digestion and processing food |
Digestive process of the mouth | food is partly broken down by the process of chewing and salivary enzymes (break down of starches) & a bolus is made |
Digestive Process of the espphagus | after being swallowed, the food enters and uses rhythmic, wave-like muscle movements (peristalsis) to move food from throat in stomach |
Digestive Process of the stomach | food is partly digested & mixed with a stomach acid, called chyme |
A large, sack-like organ that contains a very strong acid (gastric acid) | the stomach |
Digestive Process of small intestine | bile (produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder), pancreatic enzymes & other digestive enzymes help break down the food |
Duodenum | first part of the small intestine where food enters |
Jejunum | food enters here after duodenum in small intestine |
Ileum | last stop for food in the small intestine |
Here some of the water & electrolytes are removed from the food | large intestine or colon |
First part of the large intestine is called the | cecum (the appendix is connected to the cecum) |
After the cecum food travles upward in the | ascending colon |
After the ascending colon food travel across the abdomen in the | transverse colon |
After the transverse colon food goes back down the other side of the body in the | descending colon |
The last stop for food in the large intestine is to go through the | sigmoid colon |
Solid waste leaves the colon and is stored in the | rectum |
Where solid waste is excreted via the | anus |
