Becoming a Professional Teacher

What are induction programs? Programs that assist new teachers for at least the first year
What are field experiences? Practicing teaching in classroom settings
What is distance learning? Teaching students using technology, so that people from all over can learn the same thing
What are the focuses of classroom observations? Interactions, the structure of the lesson, the classroom setting etc.
What activities can be completed in order to gain practical experience to become a teacher? Observing, tutoring, instructing small groups, analyzing video cases, etc.
What is micro teaching? Students teach other students small lessons
What are teaching simulations? Students analyze teaching situations that are written, filmed or video taped, in order to understand the decisions made
What is a practicum? A short ted field based experience that allows students aimed towards teaching to spend time observing and assisting in classroom settings.
How does becoming a teacher aid help one become a teacher? It gives the teacher aid practice and field experience as to how teaching is
What is a reflective teaching log? A journal that a student who wishes to become a teacher might keep to keep track of the activities in each day and what was learned from the experience
How is substitute teaching helpful to becoming a teacher? School districts often hire people from their substitute teachers when full time positions become available
What is a professional portfolio? A collection of work that keeps track of ones accomplishments as a teacher
What should be in a professional portfolio? Lesson plans, curriculum materials, reflections on development as a teacher, evaluations of students work, etc.
What can a professional portfolio be used for? Establish a record of quantitative/qualitative performance and growth offer time, a way to show the experiences you have had, an interview tool, etc.
What is mentoring? A way to learn skills with one to one teaching and assistance
What can a mentor provide? Moral support, guidance and feedback
What is prescription giving? Giving an alternative solution to a problem
What is personal storytelling? Giving a story of experience to help discover solutions for a problem
What is rehearsal? Practicing of strategy to help avoid problems in the classroom
What is role-playing? Acting as student and teacher to figure out how to fix problems in the classrooms
What is modeling? When the mentor acts out and models the correct solution to problems
What are in-service workshops? Workshops or small classes that occur in a school
What are teacher centers? Locations that teachers are able to share and understand resources, methods and approaches to teaching
What are professional development schools? Schools that reform the teacher education with fine learning programs, research projects and new understanding for experienced educators
What are hybrid teachers? Teachers who combine part-time classroom teacher roles with leadership roles in the school
What is a teacher-researcher? A teacher who conducts research in the classroom to improve his teaching skills
What is action research? A classroom based study by teachers to improve teaching in the classrooms
What are some ways that schools can begin to reform the schools? Participating in professional teacher organizations, sharing ideas with colleagues, kneading efforts to make teachers more visible, etc.
What is a quantitative evaluation? Pencil and paper rating forms the supervisor uses to record events/behaviors in the classroom with frequencies/numbers of how often things happened
What is a qualitative evaluation? Written and open ended narratives that describe classroom events
