Covers psych meds as it relates to the LMSW Exam.

Adderall An amphetamine pharmaceutical psychostimulant comprised of amphetamine salts. Commonly used for ADHD and Narcolepsy
Ambien Also called Zolpidem, this med helps patients fall asleep more quickly and easily by slowing brain activity. Commonly used for sleep disorders.
Buspar Also called Buspirone, this is a Tricyclic Antidepressant that alleviates anxiety. Commonly used for Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Clozaril Also called Clozapine, this 2nd-generation Antipsychotic helps better control psychotic effects. Commonly used for Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
Depakote Also called Divalproex, this Anticonvulsant stabilizes mood, prevents mania, and to some extent depression. Commonly used for conduct disorder and Bipolar Disorder.
Desyrel Also called Trazadone, this Antidepressant causes some sleepiness. Commonly used for sleep disorders.
Dolophine Also called Methadone, this med can cause death if used with other drugs and is highly addictive itself. Commonly used for Heroin, morphine, and other narcotic addictions.
Elavil Also called Amitriptyline, this med is a Tricyclic Antidepressant offering a calming effect, thus alleviating anxiety. Commonly used for Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Somatiform Disorders
Haldol Also called Haloperidol, this Neuroleptic 1st Generation Antipsychotic help to control psychotic effects and alleviate symptoms of delirium such as severe agitation and hallucinations. Commonly used for Delirium, Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorder
Librium Also called Chlordiazapoxide, this benzodiazepine is used in treatment of acute alcohol withdraw symptoms by working on the central nervous system to create a calming affect. Commonly used for Substance Abuse Disorders.
Lithobid Also called Lithium, it helps to reduce aggression, stabilize mood, and control the switching between depression and mania. Commonly used for Bipolar and Conduct Disorders.
Methamphetamine This drug is a powerful central nervous system stimulant. When used to treat ADHD it is called Desoxyn.
Pamelor Also called Nortriptyline, this Tricyclic Antidepressant offers a calming affect alleviating anxiety. Commonly used for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
Paxil Also called Paroxetin, this Antidepressant helps to relieve anxious symptoms and calm nerves. It is an SSRI commonly used for Separation Anxiety, Depression Major Depression, Dysthymic Disorder, Panic Disorder, and OCD.
Prozac Also called Fluoxetine, this Antidepressant helps to relieve anxious symptoms and calm nerves. This is an SSRI commonly used for Separation Anxiety, Depression Major Depression, Dysthymic Disorder, Panic Disorder, OCD, PTSD, Somatiform Disorders, and Buli
Risperdal Also called Risperidone, this Neuroleptic Antipsychotic/Mood-Stabilizer helps alleviate symptoms associated with delirium and PTSD.
Ritalin Also called Methylphenidate, this CNS stimulant has a calming and focusing affect. Commonly used for ADHD, it works best for children ages 5-8.
Serax Also called Oxazepam, this benzodiazepine is used for acute alcohol withdraw symptoms and substance abuse disorders.
Strattera Also called Atomoxetine, this helps to increase norepinephrine and helps control behaviors but cannot be given to people with heart problems as it will result in death. Commonly used with ADHD.
Thorazine Also called Chlorpromazine, this 1st-Generation Antipsychotic helps better control psychotic affects. Commonly used for Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
Ticlid Serves as an antiplatelet to help with Vascular Dementia.
Tofranil Also called Imipramine, this Heterocyclic Antidepressant helps reduce frequency of wetting and should only be used for a maximum of 3 months. Commonly used for Enuresis.
Valium Also called Diazepam, this benzodiazepine Antidepressant (Anxiolytic) creates a calming affect. Commonly used for Substance Abuse Disorders, Delirium, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, and Sleep Disorder.
Vistaril Also called Hydroxyzine, this is for those with increase irritability, and is a mild tranquilizer for short-term treatment to help alleviate nervousness and tension. Commonly used for Dementia.
Xanax Also called Alprazolam, this benzodiazepine Antidepressant (Anxiolytic) is used to help patients to relax, think clearer, sleep better, and lead more normal lives. Commonly used for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
Zoloft Also called Setraline, this Antidepressant is used to alleviate anxiety symptoms and calm nerves. Commonly used for Separation Anxiety, depression, Major Depression, OCD, PTSD, Somatiform Disorders, Generalized Anxiety Disorders, Bulimia Nervosa, Sleep Te
