Aggression

QuestionAnswer
What is Aggression? Physical or verbal behavior intended to hurt another person who does not want to be hurt (e.c. Anger:Emotion, Hostility:Attitude)
What is Hostile Aggression? Inflicting harm for its own sake, the means and the ends coincide, hitting someone to make them hurt
What is Instrumental Aggression? Inflicting harm to obtain something of value, a means to an end, causing pain to obtain a goal. (e.g. Basketball players don't hurt the other team members to hurt them but to stop them from scoring)
What did Freud argue in regards to aggression? Freud believed that Catharsis was an actual explanation as to why people become aggressive,
What is Catharsis? Who coined them term? Discharge of repressed emotions that results in the alleviation of symptoms or the permanent relief of the condition, you build up and hold onto all of your aggression and suddenly pop off (freud)
Evolutionary Theory on Aggression? Aggression is adaptive, an evolved behavior due to competing for limiting resources, this was a genetic survival. This becomes more chaotic and aggressive when males have to defending mates, for females is defending her offspring.
What is the Diathesis Stress Model in aggression? Assumes that the disposition toward a certain behavior may result from a combination of ones genetics and early learning, however having a disposition does not mean the result can be predicted.
Biochemical (Testosterone) in Aggression Testosterone: positive Correlation with aggression, this is why males are believed to be more aggressive.
Biochemical (Serotonin) in Aggression Serotonin negative correlation with aggression, we have high serotonin levels we are less likely to be aggressive
Alcohol and Aggression Alcohol is positive correlated with aggression, more likely to be aggressive
Social Learning Theory and Aggression We learn aggressive behavior by OBSERVING and imitating them, watching a parent be abusive model aggression to their children, Corporal Punishment
What is Corporal Punishment? Spanking, kids who are spanked as a parenting method to correct unwanted behavior. Research has shown that spanking is counter productive, those who have not spanked their children are nicer, have less problems compared to those who were spanked.
Is spanking children productive? NO, research has shown that if children are spanked while growing up, they become anti-social, have issues at school. If they are raised and corrected in a healthy way, they are likely to be well adjusted adults, happy and less aggressive.
Culture of Honor and Aggression a culture that emphasizes honor and social status especially among men, not only in the US but on average coming from the Southern white men. The mentality that boys have to be boys.
Aggression and the Situation People perception of being prevented from attaining a goal will increase the probability of their responding aggressively.
what is Frustrated? The reaction we have after we have been stopped from obtaining a goal.
What are some biochemical influences in aggression? Alcohol, Testostoreone, LOW Serotonin levels, together is the biology(the chemical and the behavior interact)
Frustration Aggression Theory Frustration creates a motive to aggress, the fear of punishment may cause the displacement against another some other target
Displacement the redirection of aggression to a target other than the source of frustration, generally the newer target is safer socially acceptable
What is Relative Deprivation? Perception that one is less well than other with whom they compare themselves to
What are some Aversive Incidents that can cause aggression? Pain, Heat, or and Attack (both physical and verbal)
How does viewing pornography and sexual violence in the media distort our perception? In movie scenes of a man picking up a woman resisting his kiss and then she suddenly gives in and goes through with sexual acts, distort ones perceptions of how women actually respond to sexual coercion and increase mens aggression towards women.
Does watching sexual violence reinforce the rape myth? Studies have shown that men who view movies with sexual violence (even if its mild) are more accepting of violence against women. Pornography that portrays sexual aggression to the victim as pleasurable increases acceptance towards violence against women.
What was found in common to men who are sexually aggressive? Men who usually sexual coerce often have a history with hostile masculinity.
What are social scripts? Culturally provided mental instructions for how to act in various situations
what is desensitization? after experience many cruel acts in the world, the sympathetic feeling will extinguish due to the commonality of the acts
What are the altered perceptions? those who view television more than four hours a day, usually have a higher chance of exaggerating the frequency of violence than those who don't.
What is Cognitive Priming? Watching television more than four hours also make people to naturally associate actions and words as violent
What are Aggression cues?
What is a method to stop aggression? We must prevent aggression before it happens, we must learn our aggression cues and we must learn non-aggressiveness conflict resolution
