Basic Motivational Concepts and Hunger

What is motivation? a need or desire that energizes and directs behavior
What is an instinct? a complex behavior that is rigidly patterned throughout a species and is unlearned
What is drive-reduction theory? it attempts to explain behavior as arising from a physiological need that creates an aroused tension state (drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy the need
What is homeostasis? it refers to the body's tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state
What is an incentive? a positive or negative environmental stimulus that motivates behavior
Who came up with the hierarchy of needs? Abraham Maslow
How are human motives ranked in the hierarchy of needs? from the basic, physiological level through higher-level needs for safety, love, esteem, self-actualization, and self-transcendence; until they are satisfied, the more basic needs are more compelling than the higher-level ones
What is glucose? blood sugar
What does glucose do for the body? it is a major source of energy for body tissues
What is set point? an individual's regulated weight level, which is maintained by adjusting food intake and energy output
What is basal metabolic rate? the body's base rate of energy expenditure when resting
Motivation is best understood as a state that does what? energizes and directs behavior
What is the difference between a drive and a need? needs are physiological states; drives are psychological states
Increases in insulin will do what? lower blood sugar and trigger hunger
