What is Psychology? The study of individual behavior and mental processes
Who are the fathers of psychology? William Wundt, William James & Charles Darwin
What is William Wundt the father of? Structuralism - what are the parts of the brain?
What is William James the father of? Functionalism - what do the parts do and to what extent
What is the biological perspective? Looking at genetic make up and how it affects behavior
What is the cognitive perspective? How we think and how it affects behavior
What is the psychodynamic perspective? Behavior being a result of unconscious dynamics or inner forces -not based on observation
What is a neuron? The basic element of the nervous system
What are dendrites? Receives and distributes info from neurons
What is an axon? Carries info away to designated parts of the body
The Central Nervous System includes... The brain and the spinal cord
What are the parts of the parietal system? Somatic (voluntary movement) ---> sympathetic (fight or flight) & Autonomic (nonvoluntary movement) --->parasympathetic (calms body down)
What is perception? The sorting out of info
What is sensation? The actuation of the sensory organs
What is an absolute threshold? The smallest level needed to detect the difference between stimuli
What is difference threshold? The smallest difference between two stimuli that one can detect
What are the parts of the eye? The retina, rods, cones
What is the retina? Converts electro images
What are rods? Highly sensitive to light ---> helps see shades
What are cones? Helps see color
What are the stages of sleep? 1. drowsy 2. light sleep - brain pattern begins to slow 3 & 4. brain waves are slow 5. REM sleep - begin to dream
What are sleep disturbances? 1. night terrors 2. sleep walking/talking
What are psychoactive drugs? Anything that alters the state of mind, behaviors, or perceptions
