What is motivation? the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way
Name Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Physiological needs ( hunger and thirst) Safety needs (need to feel safe) Belongingness and love needs (need to love and be loved) Esteem needs (need for self-esteem, achievement) Self-actualization needs (need to live up to one's fullest potential)
How are physiological needs met? They're met through drive-reduction
What is drive-reduction? aroused state that drives the organism to reduce the need
What is homeostasis? A balanced internal state
What affects our motivation? 1. Internal State 2. Incentives - external 3. Our own learning history 4. Health 5. Culture
Which part of the body signals hunger or satiety? The hypothalamus based on glucose levels
What is the difference between the lateral hypothalamus and the ventromedial hypothalamus? The lateral hypothalamus signals hunger and the ventromedial hypothalamus signals satiety
What factors influence obesity? Fat cells, metabolism, genetics, and environment
What is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation? Intrinsic motivation comes from within. (Personal gain, enjoyment, self-esteem, etc.) Extrinsic is motivated by external rewards (Grades, approval of other, money, deadlines, etc.)
How do hormones control sexual behavior? Directs development of male and female sex characteristics and activates sexual behavior
What influences sexual motivation? Physiology, external cues (environment), and imagination
