Properties and Scales of Measurement
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Nominal Scale | only the identity property; no arithmetic operations are meaningful (ex: zip codes, football jersey #s) |
Ordinal Scale | only the identity and magnitude properties; no arithmetic operations are meaningful (ex: baseball rankings, class rank) |
Interval Scale | only identity, magnitude, and equal intervals properties; +/- meaningful (ex: fahrenheit and celsius temps) |
Ratio Scale | includes all properties; all arithmetic operations are meaningful (ex: weight in lbs, # correct on a test, kelvin temp.) |
Identity Property | different entities get different scores on the scale |
Magnitude Property | occurs when the ordering of values on the scale reflect the ordering of values of the trait being measured; quantitative, not categorical |
Equal Intervals Property | occurs when a difference of 1 represents the same amount of the trait being measured everywhere on the scale |
Absolute Zero Property | occurs when 0 on the scale represents a complete absence of the trait being measured (weight, kelvin) |
