Hemoglobin Iron-based protein that binds with oxygen and carbon dioxide so they can be transported in blood
Naughty Little Monkeys Eat Bananas Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils, and Basophils. (leukocytes)
Universal receiver blood type AB
universal donors blood type O
Atria 2 superior chambers of the heart
Ventricle 2 lower chambers of the heart
pericardium double-layered sac that surrounds the heart
Epicardium visceral layer containing fatty connective tissue and blood vessels or coronary vessels that nourish the heart
Myocardium thick muscular layer that makes up the bulk of the heart wall
Endocardium the interior lining of the heart t
Atrioventricular (AV) Valves Valves located between the atria and ventricles of the heart
Semilunar (SL) valves Valves located between the ventricles and the aorta or pulmonary trunk
Tricuspid Valve AV valve between the right atrium and right ventricle
Bicuspid or Mitral Valve AV valve between the left atrium and left ventricle
Pulmonary valve SL Valve located between the pulmonary trunk and the right ventricle
Aortic Valve Left SL Valve located between the aorta and left ventricle
Vasodilation when the lumen enlarges or widens
pulse Arteries expand and can be felt in the arteries that lie near the surface of the body or where they lie over bone
Superior vena cava drains blood from the upper half of the body into the heart
Inferior vena cava drains blood from the lower half of the body into the heart

Femoral artery that lies superficially just below the groin
Popliteal artery located behind the knee
Radial artery that lies superficially in the forearm and is generally used to take a persons pulse
Blood pressure the amount of pressure exerted by the blood on vessel walls, especially arteries
Systole the highest pressure within an artery during the cardiac cycle. Occurs as blood is forced out of the heart during ventricular contraction
Diastole the lowest pressure with an artery during the cardiac cycle. Occurs as ventricles relax
Function of the Cardiovascular System Circulate blood around the body to allow for exchange of gasses, nutrients, and wastes; regulates body temperature, regulates acid/base balance
Heart a four-chambered muscle pump separating oxygen-rich blood on left and oxygen-poor blood on the right by an atria ventricular septum
Purkinje fibers stimulate contraction of myocardium
Plasma Suspends blood cells, 90% water, 10% nutrients, gases, electrolytes, and hormones
Benefits of Massage on the cardiovascular system Improves and increases circulation, assists venous and lymphatic circulation, aids in lowering blood pressure, and improves flow of interstitial fluid
