C- Cognitive Therapy

Type of CBT by Beck that Changes Behaviors by Becoming Aware of Logical Errors

QuestionAnswer
Cognitive Therapy: Aaron Beck proposed that emotional behaviors result from irrational thoughts about oneself and the external world. Most studies show it a highly effective treatment for depression.
Logical Error 1) Selective abstraction: attending to detail while ignoring the total context
LE 2) Overgeneralization: drawing general conclusions on the basis of one event
LE 3) Arbitrary inference: drawing general conclusions without evidence
LE 4) Personalization: erroneously attributing external events to oneself
LE 5) Polarized thinking: thinking in black and white
Beck says depression involves three types of ideation: 1) Negative interpretations of events,2) Negative appraisals of the future,3) Dislike of oneself.
The goal of cognitive therapy is: to help clients become aware of logical errors and irrational “automatic thinking” and label events more accurately.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy: A group of therapies (both CBT and Behavior) that emphasized the individual’s perception and interpretation of external events rather than the direct influence of the surroundings themselves.
