E.PD Family Therapy

Psychodynamic Family Therapy

QuestionAnswer
Founder of Psychodynamic Family Therapy Nathan Ackerman
Assumption of Psychodynamic Family Therapy As general systems theory states, individual functioning reflects the constant interactions between the individual, his family, and society.
Goals of Psychodynamic Family Therapy The goal is to create a new way of living by helping family members adopt social roles that are flexible enough to allow complementarity between family members.
Homeostasis Allows the family system to adapt in a controlled way to change. (This is different from the static homeostasis as defined by other therapies.)
Social roles Semi-permeable membranes that allow interactions in both directions between the person and the environment.
Role complementarity Family roles must be complementary, which means they must allow for mutual support, dependence, and intimacy, and adapt to new experiences.
What is the significance of conflict? This may occur either between family members or within an individual. Either way, if continued, it will eventually affect the entire family system.
In psychodynamic family theory, what causes mental illness? It is usually due to an inability to adapt caused by an absence of complementarity, which is brought about by either too much rigidity or fluidity in family roles to allow adaption. When conflict occurs, adaption cannot occur.
One way that a breakdown of complementarity is Prejudicial Scapegoating, which is when One family member is singled out and blamed for the family’s problems, resulting in the adoption of specific roles by other family members (healer, rescuer, victim).
Psychodynamic Family Therapy Techniques Therapists should act as a catalyst to “shake up pre-existing pathogenic relationships and alignments.” Acting in stages, the therapist adopts a wide range of roles including activator, challenger, confronter, supporter, interpreter, and integrator.
