Civil society | a society in which people are involved in social and political interactions free of state control or regulation |
Collective action problem | a problem that arises when individual’s incentives lead them to avoid taking actions that are best for the group as a whole, and that they themselves would like to see accomplished |
Controlled interest group systems | groups that have usually one group for each social sector, compulsory membership, hierarchically organized, and controlled by government or its agents to mobilize support |
Corporatist interest group systems | system in which a single group represents a single interest, membership is compulsory and nearly universal, centrally organized, and the groups are involved in government policy making |
Institutional groups | groups that are based in formal organizations that have other political or social functions in addition to interest articulation |
Interest articulation | the way people and social groups express their needs and demands to their government |
Mass media | television, radio, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, and other means of popular communication |
Nonassociational groups | based on common interests and identities of ethnicity, region, religion, occupation, or perhaps kinship |
Pluralist interest group systems | system in which multiple groups may represent a single interest, membership is voluntary, has a decentralized organizational structure, and a clear separation between the interest groups and the government |
Political terror tactics | assassinations, armed attacks on other groups or government officials, and mass bloodshed tactics used by radical political groups |
Protests | a highly expressive and contentious form of citizen action that includes the collection of people advocating for a specific, common interest |
