Terminology and Concepts of the Spa Industry

Heat Transfer | occurs by conduction and convection in water |
Conduction | heat is transferred in stationy water |
Convection | heat is transferred in moving or agitated water |
Buoyancy | an upward thrust or force that pushes against submerged or partially submerged objects in the direction opposite to the force of gravity |
Density | a measurement of mass within a unit of space or unit of volume |

Immersion Baths | full or partial immersion in a tub filled with water |
Goals of immersion baths | elaxation, pain and inflammation reduction, and soft tissue extensibility |
Tepid water | between 79° F to 92° F (26° C to 33° C) used to reduce local inflammation |
Neutral-warm | used for Watsu treatments, with the ideal temperature range between 95° F and 98° F (35° C to 36° C) |
Hot water | between 99° F to 102° F (37° C to 38° C)] is recommended for relaxation |
very hot | between 103° F to 110° F (39° C to 43° C)] is recommended for pain reduction or to increase soft tissue extensibility |
