Common medications to treat cardiovascular pathologies.
Question | Answer |
---|---|
antihypertensive | a medication administered to lower blood pressure |
ACE inhibitors (angiotensin-converting enzyme) | -block the conversion of angiotensin 1 to angiotensin 2 -blocks enzyme, allowing vessels to dilate -Used primarily to tx HTN and CHF |
beta blockers | -Reduce workload of heart by slowing HR -Commonly prescribed to tx HTN, angina, or HF. |
Calcium Channel Blockers | -agents that inhibit the entry of calcium ions into heart muscle cells -causes a slowing of the heart rate -lessens demand for oxygen and nutrients -used to prevent or treat angina pectoris and/or HTN |
diuretic | administered to stimulate the kidneys to increase the secretion of urine to rid the body of excess sodium and water |
antiarrhythmic | a medication administered to control irregularities of the heartbeat |
anticoagulant | slows coagulation and prevents new clots from forming |
thrombolytic | dissolves or causes a thrombus to break up |
tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) | a thrombolytic administered to some patients having a heart attack or stroke to dissolve damaging blood clots |
vasoconstrictor | a drug that causes a narrowing of blood vessels, thereby decreasing blood flow |
vasodilator | drug that causes dilation of the blood vessels, thereby increasing blood flow |
nitroglycerin | a vasodilator that is prescribed to prevent or relieve the pain of angina by dilating the blood vessels to the heart |
Coumadin (warfarin) | Anticoagulant administered orally to prevent blood clots from forming or growing larger. Commonly prescribed for pts with arrhythmias or after MI or valve replacement. |
Heparin | Common anticoagulant that works faster than coumadin, but must be given by injection or IV. |
