Infection Control

Massage Therapy Manual manipulation of soft tissue using pressure or traction.
Pathology The study of disease and includes disease characteristics, causes, and effects.
Disease A condition of abnormal function involving anatomic structures or body systems.
Syndrome A group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular condition.
Diagnosis The process of identifying a particular disease and includes evaluation of signs and symptoms, medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests, and other procedures.
Prognosis A prediction of how the disease will progress and the chances of recovery based on the person's condition and the usual course of the disease as observed in similar situations.
Signs objective evidence that are obvious to someone other than the affected individual.
Symptoms subjective evidence perceived by an individual and include headaches, nausea, pain, and anxiety.
Acute Disease signs and symptoms have an abrupt onset, persist for a short time, and then run a brief course and resolve or, in some cases, bring death
Chronic Disease diseases that have an insidious onset, with a gradual increase in signs and symptoms and last for a long time
Risk Factors factors that increase or decrease your chances of getting a particular disease.
Disease Complications conditions that arise as a disease progresses
Epidemiology the study of the occurrence, distribution, and transmission of diseases in human populations
Incidence the number of new cases in a particular population during a specific period
Prevelance to the number of all existing cases of a disease within a particular population.
Autoimmune Disease part of a large group of diseases marked by an inappropriate or excessive immune response.
Cancer characterized by growth of abnormal cells that possess uncontrolled cell division, lack programmed cell death, and can accumulate into masses or tumors.
Deficiency Disease caused by a lack of an essential nutrient in the individual's diet or by the individual's inability to digest or absorb a particular nutrient properly.
Degenerative Disease diseases that involve tissue breakdown caused by overuse or those that occur naturally as a result of the aging process.
Genetic Disease caused by an abnormality in the genetic code. Genes are the cell's hereditary units.
Metabolic Disease when the metabolism process fails, which causes the body to have too much or too little of an essential substance such as hormones.
Infectious Disease caused by pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and pathogenic animals.
Congenital Disorders Present at birth; disorders may be caused by genetic abnormalities
Traumatic Disorders injury to body tissues and are often caused by violence or accidents.
Pathogen a biologic agent capable of causing infectious disease
Viruses nonliving entities that depend on a host cell for growth and replication.
Bacteria single-cell organisms, can be spiral-shaped or rod-shaped, and may appear singly or in chains
Fungi Molds and Yeasts; Transmitted by direct contact
Pathogenic animals organisms that live on or within a host and depend on it for nourishment and replication
Contact Transmission the most common method and occurs directly or indirectly
Vehicle Transmission when pathogens are transmitted through a common vehicle or source, such as food, water, air, and in some cases blood distributed by transfusion services.
Vector Transmission Animal or Insect; spread pathogens between two or more hosts.
Contraindication a situation that requires the therapist to modify techniques or refrain from using them to avoid possible harm.
Absolute Contraindications situations in which massage therapy should be postponed
Local Contraindications an area in which massage must be avoided because it is injured or inflamed
Standard Precautions the minimum infection control measures used in health care settings regardless of the suspected or confirmed infection status of the client
Hygiene a group of principles and practices to preserve health.
