Germinal phase | -conception to 2 weeks -zygote period -stem cells form embryo |
Embryonic phase | -3-8 weeks -neural tube -cephalocaudal development: development from head down -face development -placenta and umbilical cord |
Fetal phase | -weeks 9 to birth -placental membrane and amniotic sac form -reflexive behaviors -'active fetus' |
Active fetus | -can develop either male or female genitalia depending on absence or presence of testosterone at 8 weeks -fetal breathing -swallowing amniotic fluid |
