Mythology | Stories about gods and heroes that tries to explain how the world works. |
Persian War | A series of wars between Persia and Greece during the 400 B.C. |
Peloponnesian War | A war between Athens and Sparta in 400 B.C. |
Trojan War | The ten year war waged against Troy by the Greeks caused by the abduction of Helen by Paris and resulting to the destruction of Troy burning down. |
Hellenistic | Greek like: Heavily influenced Greek ideas. |
Colonization | The act or process of establishing a colony or colonies. |
Philosophy | A set of ideas or beliefs relating to a particular field or activity an under lying theory. |
Parthenon | Built as a temple for Athena and she was the goddess of wisdom and strategy. |
Tenant Farmers | People who paid rent, either in money or crops, to grow crops on another person's land. Tenant farmer in ancient Greece were called thetes. |
Democracy | Greek formed of where regular people participate. |
Citizenship | An idea first promoted in Athens members in community are given both rights and responsibility a key component of a democracy. |
Direct Democracy | Style of democracy that works well with smaller populations like in Athens each vote counts. |
Representative Democracy | Citizens elect others to represent them in government representatives makes decisions on behalf of the greater good. |
Barracks | Military housing Spartan boys were taken a 7 years old and lived in barracks, training and education were funded. |
The Pyrrhic Dance | Famous Spartan dance. |
Hoplite | Greek soldiers was a foot-soldier called Hoplite. Hoplites carried a large shields and spears. |
Hoplon | Name of the shield that a Hoplite soldiers held. |
Phalanx | Was a rectangular military formation used by the ancient Greeks. |
Doru | Also known as Dory, chief spear used by Hoplites , 7-9 feet long. |
Corinthian Helmet | Took its name from the city-state of Corinth. It was made of bronze which in its later styes covered the entire head and neck with slits for eyes and mouth. |
Agora | A public open space used for assemblies and markets. |
