The learning approach - key terms

TermDefinition
Conditioning Response can be changed through learning
Neutral stimulus (NS) A stimulus that does not produce a response
Reflex An innate response to a stimulus
Stimulus An object in the environment that causes a response
Unconditioned stimulus (UCS) Stimulus that produces a reflex (automatic innate) response
Unconditioned response (UCR) A naturally occurring response
Conditioned stimulus (CS) Stimulus that has acquired the power to produce a response through association. (was the NS)
Conditioned response (CR) A learned response to the conditioned stimulus
Reinforcer Outcome that strengthens the response
Positive reinforcement A reward following a certain behaviour
Negative reinforcement The avoidance of a negative consequence following a certain behaviour
Punishment Negative consequence after a behaviour
Imitation Copying others
Attention Paying attention to a role model
Retention Storing the information of a behaviour
Reproduction Replicating behaviour
Motivation Drive to do something
Vicarious reinforcement Seeing others being rewarded or punished
Direct reinforcement Personal reinforcement for behaviour
Generalisation Same learned response to other stimuli
